Your car's history

Researching the history of your Midget, or any classic, can be an interesting exercise and is a useful way of enhancing the history file and, as a result, adding value. But where do you start?

There are several things you can do:

1. DVLA research

The DVLA holds information on all previous owners. This is a great place to start. By going to the DVLA website you can download a form called a V888. It is a simple two sided form which once complete needs to be returned with a cheque for £5. You need to be patient as you won't hear from them for weeks! They will send you the details of all the cars previous owners. This is your starting point. Once you have this information you can use the electoral roll to see if the owners are still residing at the same address. If so a letter and a few photos sent to the owner requesting any information can turn up trumps. You never know what old photos or service bills lay in the bottom of someones cupboards.

2. Index registration

You can find out where your car was originally registered by referring to the index plate and doing some research on the web. The three letter prefix on number plates eg UBG, is the key. The second and third letters e.g BG, denotes the town or city where the car was first registered. BG for example is Birkenhead.

So, after steps 1 and 2 you will know where the car started its life and where it went before you bought it.

3. Local licensing offices

In 1974 all vehicle records were centralised at the DVLA in Swansea. Before this date, records were held at local vehicle licensing offices so if you have a pre 1974 car you can contact your local office to request any information they may have on file.

4. Heritage Motor Centre

The last approach to enhance a history file is to establish when the car was built and the exact specification it was built to. To do this, you need to contact Heritage Motor Centre where you have the choice of these:
