Mike Tanner's "Lake Car"

1973 Midget RWA

My wife dubbed my Midget the "Lake Car" when she first saw what I had purchased from Ebay. She was convinced that the car had been dragged from the bottom of a lake!

I had been looking for an MG BGT - the usual story easy parts etc. Browsing through Ebay I found an un-molested "73" RWA that appeared to be the ideal project car. Having had a Series 2 XJ6, a 1360 Herald, two Dollies and latterly a Mini, I wasn't a stranger to stripping and repairing cars but was familiar with the less than sympathetic repairs that former owners had affected. This is why this car appealed. Yes it's going to need some work but only what nature has infflicted.

The car is now stripped and the process of letting in new tin has started. I haven't deluded myself, this is going to be a long process and I have wrestled with the fact that a new shell would be an easier option - but a lot less fun!! I have replaced the inner wheel arch and the front kick-panel as well as the inner hinge post and outer hinge cover.

The sills have now been ground off on the drivers side and the new ones fitted. I haven't welded these into place yet. I have my eye on a spot welder and feel the need to purchase one in the new future. Looking at the rest of the car, the floors need repairing around the spring hangers on both sides and I will have to repeat the repair process al over again on the other side. Fortunately the rear floor valance and rear wings are completely solid.

I hope you enjoy the pics, keep up the good work with the web site.

Mike Tanner
